RuneScape: Dragonwilds Xbox Review

For many players, the idea of blending RuneScape's iconic skilling with a full-blown survival crafting game sounded either brilliant or completely unnecessary. Thankfully, RuneScape: Dragonwilds proves that there is plenty of life left in Gielinor's universe, delivering a surprisingly engaging survival adventure that feels familiar while still carving out its own identity. Set on the forgotten continent of Ashenfall, the game combines gathering, building, questing, and monster hunting as players work towards confronting the fearsome Dragon Queen.
What immediately stands out is how naturally RuneScape's legendary skill system translates into the survival genre. Rather than simply chopping trees to build a hut, you're constantly levelling skills, unlocking new abilities and becoming more efficient at every task. The familiar grind that has defined RuneScape for decades is still here, but it's reimagined in a way that feels rewarding rather than repetitive. Every mining expedition, hunting trip, or crafting session contributes to meaningful progression.

The survival mechanics strike an enjoyable balance between accessibility and challenge. Building a base, gathering resources, crafting equipment, and preparing for dangerous expeditions all feel satisfying without becoming overwhelming. Dragonwilds never quite matches the complexity of genre giants like Valheim or Ark, but that simplicity works in its favour. It remains approachable for RuneScape fans who may be stepping into the survival genre for the first time.
Combat is another highlight. While it lacks the razor-sharp precision of dedicated action RPGs, battles against familiar RuneScape creatures and new threats are consistently entertaining. The looming presence of dragons creates a constant sense of danger, and major encounters feel like genuine milestones. Chasing stronger gear and improving your skills before taking on the next challenge creates a rewarding gameplay loop that keeps pulling you forward.

Perhaps the most unique feature is the game's magical survival systems. Instead of chopping every tree by hand, players can summon spectral tools, instantly harvest resources, and use magical abilities to manipulate the environment. Turning routine survival tasks into spectacular displays of sorcery gives Dragonwilds its own flavour and helps distinguish it from the crowded survival market. Exploding ore veins with magic never stops being satisfying.
Visually, Ashenfall is a gorgeous setting. The world captures the fantasy charm of RuneScape while presenting it with far greater detail and atmosphere than longtime fans may expect. From dense forests and jagged mountain ranges to dragon-scorched landscapes, exploration remains consistently rewarding. The soundtrack deserves special mention as well, blending reorchestrated RuneScape classics with new compositions that perfectly complement the adventure.
Online co-op is where Dragonwilds truly shines. Exploring the continent with friends, building shared settlements, and preparing for major dragon encounters creates some genuinely memorable moments. While solo play is perfectly viable, the game feels designed around communal adventures and shared progression.

The game isn't flawless. Some survival mechanics can feel familiar if you've spent years in the genre, and the combat occasionally lacks the depth needed to sustain the longest play sessions. Players expecting a traditional MMO-style RuneScape experience may also need time to adjust to the survival-focused structure. However, these issues rarely overshadow what Dragonwilds does well.
Ultimately, RuneScape: Dragonwilds successfully proves that RuneScape's DNA can thrive outside the MMO space. By combining skilling, exploration, crafting, magic, and dragon hunting into a compelling survival package, Jagex has created one of the more refreshing survival adventures available on Xbox.
