Video Game Jazz - Not a Phone in Sight by Christina Sochor

1 min read

A progressive, live jazz album from pianist Christina Sochor and her trio from Hawaii. Not a Phone in Sight features video game music from Super Mario, Pokémon, The Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, Katamari Damacy, Cuphead and more.

Sochor uses familiar video game melodies as the foundation for rich reharmonizations, and expressive piano performances. Rosalina’s Waltz, Song of Storms, and National Park highlight Sochor’s expressive, technically intricate piano playing, and funky rhythmic moments without losing the melodies at the center of each piece. Drummer Abe Lagrimas and double bassist Eric Nakamoto are equally active in the arrangements, trading between supporting and featured roles like a well-oiled machine.

Not a Phone in Sight follows Sochor’s previous GameChops singles “Bob-omb Battlefield” and “National Park” and brings together arrangements from across Nintendo games and beyond in her first full-length GameChops album.
