Slots & Daggers - Quick Review

Slots & Daggers is what happens when a slot machine, a goblin, and a crunchy hip‑hop drum loop walk into a bar and decide to make a roguelike. It’s weird, scrappy, charming, and absolutely committed to its own bit and that bit is “what if gambling and goblin‑stabbing were the same action?”
Created solo by Friedemann (the developer behind SUMMERHOUSE), this is a tiny, tightly wound arcade‑RPG hybrid that knows exactly what it wants to be: fast, noisy, and delightfully odd. It’s the kind of game that feels like it was scribbled in a notebook during a late‑night sugar rush, then somehow made real.

The core loop is simple but surprisingly tactical: You spin a slot reel, and whatever symbols land determine your attacks, blocks, buffs, or coin gains. It’s part randomness, part planning, part “oh god please give me a dagger right now.”
The game’s brilliance is how quickly it teaches you to read the reels like a gambler reading tells.... except the tells are crude little doodles of goblins and swords. Runs are short, punchy, and always one spin away from disaster or triumph.
The 4–8 hour campaign is exactly the right length for something this focused. It never outstays its welcome, and the “Egg Arena” high‑score mode gives you a reason to keep chasing that perfect run.

The art style looks like someone drew a fantasy RPG on a napkin with a biro, and I mean that as a compliment. Everything has this scrappy, handmade charm — the goblins, the UI, the little animations that pop when you land a good spin.
The soundtrack leans into crunchy hip‑hop drum machines, giving the whole experience a lo‑fi arcade vibe. It’s weirdly hypnotic. You’ll hear pling pling pling in your sleep.

This isn’t a deep, sprawling roguelike with endless synergies. It’s a snack and a well‑seasoned, crunchy one at that. You get enough upgrades and modifiers to feel clever, but not so many that you’re drowning in builds.
The game is honest about its scope: it’s small, focused, and made with care. And that honesty pays off. You’re not here for a 60‑hour meta‑progression grind. You’re here to spin, stab, and vibe.

Pros
Unique slot‑machine‑meets‑RPG combat that’s more strategic than it looks
Fantastic handmade art style full of personality
Crunchy hip‑hop beats that give it a distinct rhythm
Short, focused campaign that respects your time
Egg Arena mode adds replay value
Perfect for quick sessions
Cons
Limited content compared to larger roguelikes
Randomness can occasionally feel punishing
If the aesthetic doesn’t click for you, nothing else will change your mind

Slots & Daggers is a tiny, eccentric gem, a game that knows exactly what it is and executes that vision with confidence and charm. It’s fast, funny, and full of personality, and it scratches that “one more run” itch beautifully. If you like weird indie experiments, roguelike loops, or anything that goes pling when you hit a goblin, this is absolutely worth your time.
