Ikonei Island: An Earthlock Adventure Review (Xbox)

There is no shortage of cosy life-sims and crafting adventures these days, but Ikonei Island: An Earthlock Adventure manages to carve out its own identity by blending farming, exploration, creature companionship, and light combat into a colourful island-hopping adventure. Developed by Snowcastle Games and set within the Earthlock universe, the game invites players to tame a mysterious island, uncover its secrets, and create a home away from home.

From the moment you arrive on Ikonei Island, the game's bright art style and laid-back atmosphere make a strong first impression. The island is packed with different biomes, hidden pathways, resources to gather, and creatures to discover. While comparisons to games such as Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing are inevitable, Ikonei Island places a greater emphasis on exploration and adventure, giving players a larger sense of progression as new areas gradually open up.

The core gameplay loop revolves around gathering resources, crafting tools, upgrading equipment, and expanding your settlement. Trees need chopping, rocks need mining, and workshops need building. These systems are straightforward, but there's a satisfying sense of momentum as your tiny camp slowly transforms into a thriving base of operations. Every new blueprint or upgrade feels meaningful because it helps streamline future tasks while encouraging further exploration.

One of the game's most enjoyable features is its creature system. Throughout the island you'll encounter magical wildlife that can be befriended and recruited. These creatures aren't simply pets that follow you around; many possess unique abilities that help you gather resources or access previously unreachable areas. This gives the exploration a pleasant Metroidvania-style twist, where returning to older regions with new creature abilities often reveals fresh secrets and rewards.

Combat exists alongside the cosy elements, although it remains relatively simple throughout. Players battle hostile creatures and pirates while crafting stronger weapons and equipment to survive tougher encounters. The action is accessible and approachable rather than particularly deep, making it suitable for younger players or those who prefer relaxation over intense challenge. The pirate storyline provides a clear objective, helping to tie together the game's many crafting and exploration systems without overwhelming players with complex narratives.

Farming fans will also find plenty to enjoy. Establishing crop fields, tending harvests, and creating an efficient farm contributes to the island's sense of growth and ownership. Decorating your home and shaping parts of the island adds another layer of personalisation that encourages creativity and long-term investment. While these systems aren't as detailed as those found in dedicated farming simulators, they complement the adventure perfectly.

Perhaps the biggest strength of Ikonei Island is its cooperative multiplayer. The ability to tackle virtually every activity together, from farming and crafting to combat and exploration, turns the island into an ideal shared adventure. Whether you're gathering resources with friends or taking on pirate camps, the cooperative experience helps elevate activities that may feel repetitive when playing solo.

That said, the game isn't without its shortcomings. Some tasks become repetitive after extended play sessions, particularly when resource gathering demands large quantities of materials. Progression can occasionally feel grindy, and combat never evolves enough to become a major highlight. Players looking for a deeply complex life-sim or RPG may also find some of the systems a little lightweight compared to genre heavyweights.

Pros:

  • Charming and colourful world

  • Fun creature companion system

  • Relaxing blend of farming, crafting, and exploration

  • Great co-op support

  • Strong sense of progression and discovery

Cons:

  • Resource gathering can become repetitive

  • Combat is fairly basic

  • Some systems lack long-term depth

  • Can feel grindy during later upgrades

Ikonei Island: An Earthlock Adventure succeeds because it understands exactly what kind of experience it wants to deliver. It's a charming, wholesome adventure filled with exploration, crafting, farming, creature collecting, and cooperative fun. While its systems may lack the depth of the biggest names in the genre, the combination of magical companions, island customisation, and relaxed progression creates an experience that's easy to sink dozens of hours into. For players who enjoy cosy adventures with a sense of discovery and plenty of activities to juggle, Ikonei Island is well worth a visit.
