Journey of Johann: Castle Crusade (Xbox) Review

There is something refreshingly straightforward about Journey of Johann: Castle Crusade. It doesn't try to reinvent the platforming genre, drown players in endless upgrades, or pad its runtime with unnecessary content. Instead, it focuses on delivering a compact action-platforming adventure built around precision, exploration, and speedrunning-friendly level design. Developed by Apapappa Games and published by Xitilon, the game combines platforming, light puzzle-solving, combat, and collectible hunting into an experience that feels inspired by retro classics while incorporating a few clever modern ideas.

The premise is simple: guide Johann through a dangerous castle packed with enemies, environmental hazards, secrets, and platforming trials on the way to a climactic boss encounter. While there isn't a huge emphasis on storytelling, the castle itself becomes the star of the show. Each level introduces new obstacles and requires players to carefully navigate traps while uncovering hidden collectibles and secret areas.

The relatively minimalist approach works in the game's favour. Rather than interrupting gameplay with lengthy cutscenes or exposition, Castle Crusade keeps players moving forward, always presenting another challenge just around the corner.

At first glance, Johann's adventure appears to be a fairly traditional 2D platformer, but the game's most interesting mechanic comes from how weapons are used. They're not simply tools for defeating enemies. Weapons can also help with traversal, allowing players to climb, block incoming attacks, and solve environmental challenges in creative ways.

This additional layer gives the platforming a bit more depth than expected. Timing jumps is only part of the equation. Players must consider when to use their equipment defensively, offensively, or as a mobility tool. It creates a satisfying flow once the mechanics click, especially during later sections where multiple hazards need to be managed at once.

One area where Journey of Johann: Castle Crusade stands out is its focus on replayability. The developers specifically designed the game with speedrunning in mind, including time trials that encourage players to master level layouts and perfect their routes.

For completionists, there are goblets and secrets hidden throughout the castle, providing additional reasons to revisit levels. Meanwhile, players chasing the best times will find themselves shaving seconds off runs and learning every shortcut available. This emphasis on mastery helps the game avoid feeling like a one-and-done experience despite its relatively modest scope.

Visually, the game embraces a colourful retro-inspired aesthetic that fits nicely with its arcade-style gameplay. Character animations are simple but effective, while level designs remain readable enough that players can quickly identify hazards and opportunities.

The presentation isn't going to compete with larger-budget platformers, but it doesn't need to. Everything feels clean, functional, and designed around serving the gameplay first and foremost.

Like many smaller indie platformers, Castle Crusade occasionally feels limited by its budget. Some players may wish there were more environmental variety, a larger campaign, or a stronger narrative hook to keep them invested. The straightforward structure means much of the enjoyment comes from mastering mechanics and chasing better completion times rather than discovering dramatic new twists. Those looking for a sprawling Metroidvania or a story-heavy adventure may find the experience a little lightweight.

Pros

  • Clever weapon-based traversal mechanics

  • Rewarding platforming challenges

  • Plenty of secrets and collectibles

  • Strong support for speedrunning and replayability

  • Affordable price point

Cons

  • Limited story and world-building

  • Short overall length

  • Some players may want more variety

  • Doesn't do much to evolve the genre

Journey of Johann: Castle Crusade is a focused and enjoyable action-platformer that understands exactly what it wants to be. Its combination of platforming, puzzle-solving, combat, and speedrunning mechanics creates a satisfying gameplay loop that rewards skill and replayability over spectacle. While it may not break new ground, its clever weapon mechanics, hidden collectibles, and challenge-driven design make it an easy recommendation for fans of classic platformers.
