Apidya' Special Review - Xbox

Apidya’ Special is a rare kind of remake, one that remembers exactly why the original mattered, then rebuilds it with enough care and modernisation to make that memory feel vivid again. It’s still unmistakably Apidya: a strange, organic, insect‑themed shoot ’em up where you play a furious bee on a quest for vengeance, but now presented with widescreen options, rebuilt pixel art, modernised difficulty settings, and a handful of new surprises that make it feel more than a museum piece.

The original Apidya was a standout Amiga shooter, fast, colourful, punishing, and packed with personality. Its insect‑world aesthetic set it apart from the spaceship‑heavy shmups of the era, and its soundtrack became something of a cult favourite. Apidya’ Special keeps that identity intact. The five themed worlds (Meadow, Pond, Sewers, Cyber, Lair) return with their grotesque charm, now rebuilt from the ground up rather than emulated.

The ability to switch between modern HD widescreen and the original 4:3 presentation is more than a novelty, it’s a reminder of how well the game’s art direction holds up. Optional CRT filters, scanlines, and bloom effects recreate the Amiga feel with surprising accuracy, while enhanced visuals originally created for an unreleased console version finally get their moment.

On Xbox, Apidya’ Special runs smoothly and feels responsive, retaining the frantic projectile‑dodging and tight movement that defined the original. The difficulty curve is still sharp, but modernised settings make it more approachable without diluting the challenge. The addition of co‑op is a standout improvement, a second bee with its own abilities adds a fresh dynamic to levels that were once strictly solo affairs.

Randomised events like Night Mode help keep repeat runs unpredictable, and the automatic stage‑based saving makes progression less punishing than the Amiga days. The soundtrack, newly rearranged by Chris Hülsbeck, is a genuine highlight: nostalgic, but richer and more layered than ever.

Where the 1992 release was defined by its technical ambition and distinctive world‑building, Apidya’ Special feels like a celebration of that legacy. The core gameplay remains intact with fast, unforgiving, and characterful, but the remake’s rebuilt assets, expanded presentation options, co‑op mode, and modern accessibility tweaks make it significantly more welcoming. It’s still challenging, still eccentric, still unmistakably Apidya, but now polished enough to stand confidently among modern retro‑revival shooters.

Pros

  • Beautifully rebuilt visuals with optional CRT and classic modes

  • Faithful to the original’s tone, pacing, and personality

  • Excellent remastered and rearranged soundtrack

  • Co‑op mode adds meaningful replay value

  • Randomised events keep runs fresh

  • Smooth performance and responsive controls on Xbox

Cons

  • Difficulty spikes can still feel harsh

  • Busy scenery occasionally makes hazards hard to read

  • Stage‑based saving may frustrate players used to full manual saves

  • Some collision detection remains unforgiving

Apidya’ Special is a lovingly crafted revival, not just a nostalgia trip, but a genuinely strong shoot ’em up that respects its roots while embracing modern expectations. If you remember the Amiga original, this is the best way to experience it today. If you’re new to Apidya, it’s a strange, stylish, and surprisingly charming shmup that still knows how to sting.
