Toy Story 3 Complete Edition Review (Xbox)

There are plenty of licensed games that thrive on nostalgia alone, but Toy Story 3 Complete Edition is a reminder of a time when movie tie-ins could genuinely be fantastic games in their own right. Originally released alongside Pixar's beloved 2010 film and now updated with improved visuals, performance enhancements, and previously exclusive content, this Xbox release proves that some toys never stop being fun. The game allows players to relive the adventures of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and Jessie through both a story-driven campaign and the excellent Toy Box sandbox mode.

The Story Mode closely follows the events of Toy Story 3, taking players through many of the film's most memorable moments. From daring train rescues to exploring Sunnyside Daycare and surviving the chaotic junkyard sequences, the campaign does a great job of translating the movie's action into varied platforming levels.
What keeps the gameplay engaging is the ability to switch between Woody, Buzz, and Jessie. Each character brings unique abilities to the adventure. Woody can use his pull-string to swing across gaps, Buzz offers impressive strength for throwing objects and teammates, while Jessie provides agility that proves useful in several platforming challenges. This constant variety prevents the campaign from becoming repetitive and makes each level feel distinct.
The platforming itself remains simple compared to modern genre heavyweights, but it's approachable, responsive, and enjoyable for players of all ages. Younger gamers will find it welcoming, while older players will appreciate revisiting a genuinely well-crafted family-friendly adventure.

As enjoyable as the campaign is, Toy Box Mode remains the standout feature and the primary reason this game has maintained such a loyal following over the years. Rather than simply replaying movie scenes, this sandbox mode drops players into Woody's Roundup, a Wild West-themed town packed with missions, collectibles, and opportunities for creativity.
The mode feels like a family-friendly open-world game. Completing quests earns gold that can be spent on customising the town, decorating buildings, altering appearances, and expanding your growing settlement. One minute you're helping local residents, the next you're redesigning the entire town or hunting down hidden collectibles.
Even by today's standards, Toy Box Mode feels surprisingly ambitious. It constantly encourages experimentation and creativity, making it easy to lose hours simply tinkering with the world. The inclusion of previously exclusive content, including playable Emperor Zurg and additional theme packs, gives players even more reasons to dive in and start building.

The Complete Edition benefits from upgraded graphics, improved resolution, and enhanced frame rates, helping the colourful Pixar-inspired visuals look cleaner and smoother than ever.
The vibrant environments still capture the charm of the films remarkably well. Character models are expressive, locations are instantly recognisable, and the bright art style has aged far better than many games from its era. While there are occasional reminders that this is fundamentally a remaster of a game from 2010, the visual improvements make it much easier to appreciate today.
Local two-player co-op is available in both Story Mode and Toy Box Mode, making this an excellent family game. Whether you're playing alongside your children, siblings, or another nostalgic Pixar fan, the drop-in cooperative gameplay adds an extra layer of fun. Some of the campaign's more action-focused moments feel especially enjoyable with a second player, while Toy Box Mode becomes even more chaotic as two players work together to shape the town.

Toy Story 3 Complete Edition remains one of the finest movie-based games ever made. What could have been a simple nostalgia release is elevated by excellent platforming, charming presentation, and the endlessly entertaining Toy Box Mode that was years ahead of its time. The campaign faithfully recreates the film's biggest moments, but it's the freedom and creativity of the sandbox mode that continues to make the game special.
For longtime fans, this is a welcome return to a beloved classic. For newcomers, it's an opportunity to discover why so many players still talk about Toy Box Mode more than a decade later. Like the toys themselves, this adventure has stood the test of time.
