SpiderHeck - Review - Xbox

Writer: XPN NetworkXPN Network

I absolutely love it when a video game releases that is completely random in terms of what it is about, but is extremely fun in how it plays! Games like Nidhogg and Starwhal come to mind in recent memory, but today a new game releases that falls right into this category of awesomeness! SpiderHeck releases today (22nd September 2022) on all platforms and I was lucky enough to get the game early to spend some time with before release!

SpiderHeck is a fast-paced couch co-op brawler where spiders battle it out in a deadly dance of chaos. It's developed by Neverjam and published by tinyBuild. Choose to take on waves of ferocious enemies as a lone wolf (spider), or join forces with your friends, then challenge them to a duel afterwards so you can gleefully watch them do a neat trick before they launch themselves face-first into the lava.

Whilst there isn't a story or any real plot to the game that doesn't really matter here. There are a variety of game modes to keep you busy and although this is a game that really shines when playing with friends (especially when beating them) there is alot of single player content to keep you entertained when you're flying solo. You have your basic versus modes, a wave survival mode where you have to defeat ongoing waves of enemies and also a single-player challenge mode. It's great that the majority of the modes are playable in multiplayer so you can grab your friends and bring them along for the ride. I mainly enjoyed playing the multiplayer aspect of the game but if you like more of a challenge the Tiers of Heck challenges will give you something to stick your teeth into. It offers six tiers of three challenges with progressing difficulty, but even the earlier challenges can be pretty tough. Luckily there is a good variety in the challenges that even if you struggle on certain ones you may excel in the others.

The game also features a variety of different weapons to crush your enemies with. There is the obvious lightsaber laser sword as well as shotguns, rocket launchers, mines and more. All in there are 20 different weapons to play with across over 30 different arenas/maps and you can even customise your spiders with a selection of colours and fancy hats! I mean who doesn't want to play as a spider in a pirate hat wielding a shotgun?!

One thing I did like was that you need to navigate the menu as one of the spiders. It's a simple but enjoyable addition to the game, but I suppose it does enable you to get some practice before starting a game! The game controls really well as well, and once you master the physics system in the game you will be flying around the arenas with it. It's definitely one of those games that's really easy to play and enjoy but much trickier to master. Graphically the game is simple but effective. With its bright neon colour scheme and sharp lined art style and featuring electro soundtrack with awesome upbeat tracks to get you in the spider slaying mood. You really need to play it to experience it for yourself!

Overall I had a blast with SpiderHeck. It's bright graphics and dynamic soundtrack, coupled with strong controls make it an extremely enjoyable experience and one that really shines when playing with others. Yes it takes alot to master, but even then it's enjoyable enough even for beginners. Plus the fact its also available on Xbox Game Pass means everyone should experience the joy of web swinging around as a lightsaber wielding spider - no excuses! TOTAL SCORE: 8/10

SpiderHeck was released onto the Xbox store on 22nd September 2022. Its playable on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC and was also released on other platforms. The game is priced at £12.49 and can be purchased HERE. It can also be played on Xbox Game Pass. A copy of the game was provided for this review. A big thanks for that!
