Psalm 5:9-13 Review (Xbox Series X|S)

Horror games often try to stretch a few scares across several hours, but Psalm 5:9-13 takes the opposite approach. This brief psychological horror experience from Axyos Games aims to deliver a concentrated dose of dread in around 30 minutes, using a VHS-inspired presentation, unsettling environments, and an oppressive atmosphere rather than cheap jump scares.
From the moment you step into its seemingly ordinary setting, there is a lingering sense that something isn't quite right. The game's central mechanic revolves around exploring the environment and searching for anomalies, with each discovery reinforcing the feeling that reality is slowly unravelling around you. The simplicity of the concept works in the game's favour, allowing the atmosphere to remain the star of the show.

The visuals do a solid job of supporting the horror. The VHS filter adds a layer of unease without completely obscuring the environment, while the realistic locations feel grounded enough to make the supernatural elements more disturbing when they appear. Rather than relying on monsters chasing you every few minutes, the game leans heavily into tension and anticipation, encouraging players to question every shadow and strange detail they encounter.
Audio is arguably the strongest aspect of the experience. The combination of ambient sounds, environmental noises, and clever use of silence creates an oppressive atmosphere that keeps you on edge throughout the short runtime. Playing with headphones is highly recommended, as the sound design does much of the heavy lifting when it comes to generating fear.

The biggest drawback is the game's length. At roughly half an hour, the journey is over almost as soon as it begins. Some players may feel disappointed just as the story and mystery start to build momentum. The gameplay itself is also fairly limited, functioning more as a walking simulator than a traditional survival horror title. Those expecting puzzles, combat, or deeper mechanics may find the experience a little too straightforward.
That said, Psalm 5:9-13 never pretends to be anything else. It's a compact horror experience designed to provide a quick, memorable scare, and in that respect it largely succeeds. If you enjoy atmospheric psychological horror in the vein of indie VHS-inspired experiences, there's enough here to make the short trip worthwhile.

Pros
Excellent atmosphere and sense of dread
Effective VHS aesthetic
Strong sound design
Easy to complete in a single sitting
Delivers several genuinely unsettling moments
Cons
Very short runtime
Limited interaction and gameplay mechanics

May be too simple for hardcore horror fans

A short but effective slice of psychological horror that understands how to build tension. It won't last long, but for fans of atmospheric scares, Psalm 5:9-13 leaves a lingering impression after you wrap up.
