Journey of Johann: Grasslands (Xbox) Review

There are plenty of retro-inspired platformers on Xbox these days, but Journey of Johann: Grasslands manages to carve out its own identity through clever level design and a surprising emphasis on movement mastery. Developed by Apapappa Games and published by Xitilon, this compact action-platformer blends exploration, combat, puzzle-solving, and speedrunning into a focused adventure that never overstays its welcome.

At first glance, Journey of Johann: Grasslands looks like a straightforward throwback. Johann runs, jumps, swings weapons and battles enemies across a series of colourful stages. However, it quickly becomes apparent that success isn't just about reaching the exit. Levels are packed with goblets to collect, secrets to uncover, and optional challenges that encourage players to revisit stages and refine their routes.

The game's standout feature is its approach to weapon-based traversal. Weapons aren't merely tools for dispatching enemies. They're integrated into movement and exploration, allowing Johann to climb, block attacks, and overcome environmental obstacles in creative ways. This gives the gameplay a welcome layer of depth, turning what could have been a standard platformer into something that constantly asks players to think about how they navigate each area.

Platforming itself feels deliberately designed around precision. Stages are built to reward experimentation and optimisation, and it's easy to see why the developers describe the game as being designed with speedrunning in mind. After completing a level once, the temptation to dive back in and shave precious seconds from your best time becomes surprisingly addictive. Every shortcut discovered and every perfectly executed sequence feels rewarding.

The game's relatively short runtime may disappoint players looking for a lengthy campaign, but its replay value helps compensate. Chasing collectibles, improving completion times, and mastering boss encounters gives completionists and speedrunners plenty of reasons to stick around even after the credits roll.

Visually, Journey of Johann: Grasslands embraces a clean retro aesthetic that prioritises readability over flashy effects. While it won't push modern hardware to its limits, the colourful environments and straightforward presentation suit the gameplay perfectly. The focus remains firmly on movement, timing, and exploration.

If there's a drawback, it's that the game's simplicity may leave some players wanting more. The combat is functional rather than spectacular, and those who prefer narrative-driven adventures may find the experience a little light on story. The challenge and satisfaction come from mastering mechanics rather than becoming invested in a sprawling world or cast

of characters.

One aspect worth mentioning in the review is that Journey of Johann: Grasslands is very achievement-friendly. According to TrueAchievements, the game features achievements worth 5,000 Gamerscore, with an estimated completion time of around 30 minutes to 1 hour for experienced players.

Ultimately, Journey of Johann: Grasslands is a charming, mechanically focused platformer that understands exactly what it wants to be. Its blend of exploration, puzzle elements, and speedrun-friendly level design creates an experience that's easy to pick up and difficult to put down for anyone who enjoys perfecting their performance.
