A Game About Penguins is a cozy, social sandbox where you waddle around as an adorable penguin, slide across snowy hills, fish, explore, and hang out with friends. The demo is free on Steam and supports online co‑op for up to 8 players, making it a playful, low‑pressure space to explore together. I was lucky enough to be sent a copy of the demo prior to its release recently.
The game focuses on relaxed exploration and playful movement—sliding down icy hills, performing tricks, swimming through colorful underwater zones, and fishing for nearly a hundred unique species to fill out your journal. You can decorate your own igloo, upgrade your stats, complete quests from quirky NPCs, and unlock a huge range of outfits and accessories to express your penguin’s personality.
Beyond exploration, the game leans heavily into social fun. Players can gather in shared spaces like the village or the bustling restaurant, challenge each other in minigames and arcade cabinets, or jump into structured snowball fights with physics‑driven chaos. Emotes, selfies with your “Penguin Phone,” and wobbly player collisions add to the lighthearted vibe. It’s designed as a laid‑back, community‑driven experience where the joy comes from hanging out, discovering surprises, and carving out your own little penguin life.
So what does the demo include?
Meet 8 NPCs, including 3 questlines to complete.
Catch up to 46 fish species and begin your collection.
Customize your penguin with 161 available market items.
Upgrade your stats (up to level 3 per upgrade).
Play 2 arcade games and 2 minigames inside the restaurant's social hub.
Use the Penguin Phone to take photos, message friends, customize your look, and sell your fish.
I ended up having way more fun with the demo than I expected. The moment I started sliding around as this goofy little penguin, it just clicked =, the movement is silly in the best way, and half the joy is just wobbling into things and seeing what happens. I wandered around, did a bit of fishing, poked at some minigames, and basically treated the place like a snowy playground.
What surprised me most is how quickly it put me in a good mood. Even with the limited content, there’s this warm, social vibe that makes the world feel inviting, like you’re meant to just chill, mess around, and enjoy being a penguin for a while. Nothing felt demanding or stressful; it was just… nice. If the full game keeps this tone, I can see myself losing hours to it without even noticing with a few friends!.
