Gecko Gods Review (Nintendo Switch 2)

There are plenty of games that try to overwhelm players with massive maps, endless objectives, and constant action. Gecko Gods takes the opposite approach. Developed by Inresin and published by Super Rare Games, this charming puzzle-adventure invites players to slow down, climb at their own pace, and uncover the secrets of a forgotten island civilisation from the perspective of a tiny gecko.

One of Gecko Gods' greatest strengths is its unique perspective. Rather than playing as a heroic warrior or treasure hunter, you control a gecko with the ability to scale walls, cling to ceilings, and squeeze into places that would be inaccessible to larger creatures. Exploring ancient ruins becomes a playground of vertical movement, and simply traversing the environment feels rewarding thanks to the freedom of your gecko-like abilities.

Movement is smooth and intuitive, encouraging experimentation rather than frustration. Every new structure feels like a puzzle in itself as you search for hidden pathways, collectibles, and clues scattered throughout the world. There's a satisfying sense of discovery around every corner, and the game rarely feels the need to hold your hand.

The game's island chain serves as a sprawling sandbox for curious players. Sun-drenched temples, hidden caves, and mysterious ruins are packed with environmental storytelling that gradually reveals the fate of the civilisation that once inhabited the archipelago.

Unlike many adventure games, Gecko Gods isn't interested in filling every moment with danger. There are no lengthy combat encounters or stressful survival mechanics. Instead, the focus remains firmly on exploration, platforming, and puzzle-solving. The result is an experience that's surprisingly refreshing in today's market.

The game rewards players who take their time. Whether you're searching for hidden secrets, hunting down insects to snack on, or simply admiring the scenery, there is a genuine sense of tranquillity throughout the adventure.

The environmental puzzles strike a welcoming balance between accessibility and engagement. Rather than presenting brain-melting challenges designed to halt progress, Gecko Gods focuses on observation, exploration, and logical thinking.

Most puzzles feel naturally integrated into the environment, making discoveries feel organic rather than artificially gated. While puzzle veterans may find some challenges relatively straightforward, the approachable design fits perfectly with the game's relaxed atmosphere.

Between land-based exploration sessions, players can travel between islands aboard a small wooden boat. These sailing segments act as peaceful breathing spaces and help strengthen the sense of embarking on a genuine journey across an ancient archipelago. Watching distant islands slowly emerge from the horizon creates anticipation for what secrets may lie ahead, while the slower pace helps the game maintain its calming identity.

Gecko Gods boasts a colourful and inviting art style that complements its laid-back gameplay. From lush vegetation to weathered stone ruins, the environments feel alive without becoming visually overwhelming. The tiny scale of the protagonist offers a fresh perspective on the world, making seemingly ordinary landscapes feel grand and imposing.

On Nintendo Switch 2, the game benefits from vibrant presentation and sharp image quality, helping the atmospheric world stand out whether played handheld or on a television.

Pros

  • Relaxing, stress-free adventure with no focus on combat

  • Unique gecko movement mechanics make exploration enjoyable

  • Clever environmental puzzles that are approachable and satisfying

  • Charming island-hopping structure with tranquil sailing sections

  • Beautiful, colourful world packed with secrets to discover

  • Strong sense of atmosphere and discovery

  • Great fit for players who enjoy cosy exploration games

Cons

  • Puzzle veterans may find some challenges too simple

  • Lack of combat or danger may feel uneventful for action fans

  • Exploration-focused gameplay can occasionally feel repetitive

  • Story is told largely through environmental details rather than direct narrative

  • Slow pace won't appeal to everyone

Gecko Gods won't appeal to players looking for fast-paced action, difficult combat encounters, or constant adrenaline rushes. What it offers instead is something far rarer: a genuinely relaxing adventure built around curiosity, movement, and discovery.

Its satisfying climbing mechanics, charming presentation, atmospheric world, and focus on exploration make it an easy game to sink into for a few peaceful hours. While some puzzles may be a little too straightforward for genre veterans, the overall experience succeeds because it never loses sight of its calming, wonder-filled vision. For anyone seeking a cosy puzzle-adventure with a distinctive premise and plenty of secrets to uncover, Gecko Gods is a delightful journey that's well worth taking.
