WALTO Review (Steam)

There is a certain confidence to WALTO that I immediately admired. It doesn't try to pad itself out with fetch quests, endless upgrades, or sprawling maps. Instead, developer KUKUKU GAMES has built a focused boss-rush action game that throws you into a bleak world overrun by monstrous rabbits and simply asks one question: are your reflexes good enough? The entire experience is built around intense one-on-one encounters where dodging and attacking become a single fluid action rather than separate systems.

The game's greatest strength is its combat philosophy. Every boss encounter feels like a deadly dance, demanding precision and concentration. You're constantly looking for tiny openings between brutal attack patterns, weaving through danger before striking back with lightning-fast counters. Success isn't just about memorising attacks. It's about maintaining composure when the screen fills with threats and trusting your instincts under pressure. When everything clicks, WALTO delivers that wonderful sensation shared by the best boss-rush games: the feeling that you're improving as a player rather than simply levelling up a character.

The rabbit-themed bosses are surprisingly memorable, each acting as a unique test of skill. The Steam description highlights predators ranging from airborne swordsmen to fortress-like monstrosities and city-destroying colossi, and the encounters reflect that variety with multi-phase battles that evolve as enemies are pushed to their limits. Rather than repeating the same ideas, bosses transform throughout fights, forcing you to adapt on the fly and learn entirely new attack sequences.

Visually, WALTO embraces a dark fantasy aesthetic that gives the world an unsettling atmosphere. The contrast between cute rabbit imagery and the terrifying creatures you face creates a strange but effective tone. It's a relatively simple presentation, yet one that complements the relentless combat and oppressive mood. The focus always remains on readability and the boss encounters themselves, which is exactly where it should be in a game like this.

What may divide players is the difficulty. WALTO is unapologetically demanding and openly markets itself around extreme reflex-based gameplay. If you're looking for a relaxing action game, this probably isn't it. Death comes quickly, mistakes are punished harshly, and progression is earned through mastery. For some players that's the entire appeal, while others may find the challenge a little too rigid.

The game's relatively small scope also means you'll get the most value from replaying encounters and chasing mastery rather than expecting a lengthy campaign. WALTO feels designed for players who enjoy learning boss patterns, shaving seconds off their completion times, and overcoming seemingly impossible odds through persistence.

One aspect that may be a sticking point for some players is that WALTO's Steam page discloses the use of AI-generated content during development. According to the developer, AI was used to assist with the creation of certain visual assets, including background elements and illustrations. While the core gameplay and boss-focused design remain the main attraction, players who are sensitive to the use of generative AI in game development may want to take this into consideration before purchasing. For others, the impact is likely to come down to whether the final presentation feels cohesive and supports the game's dark fantasy atmosphere.

Pros

  • Excellent boss-focused combat

  • Multi-phase encounters keep fights fresh

  • Strong sense of player mastery and progression

  • Distinctive dark fantasy rabbit world

  • Great value for players who enjoy challenge

Cons

  • Difficulty may be too punishing for some

  • Limited scope compared to larger action games

  • Heavy focus on boss fights leaves little room for variety

  • Requires patience and repeated attempts to succeed

WALTO is a sharp, focused boss-rush experience that knows exactly what it wants to be. Its blend of stylish dark fantasy visuals, memorable rabbit-themed bosses, and combat built around aggressive evasive play creates a surprisingly compelling challenge. It won't be for everyone, particularly those who prefer a gentler difficulty curve, but players who enjoy demanding action games and the thrill of mastering tough boss encounters will find plenty to appreciate here.
