Sugar Shatter - Mini Review - Steam

Sugar Shatter is a surprisingly charming mash‑up: a brick‑breaker fighting game where every ricocheted candy ball becomes a tiny act of violence. It’s bright, sugary, and mechanically sharper than its confectionary theme suggests.

What we thought:

A sweet, chaotic arcade fighter with real mechanical bite, buoyed by character variety and a playful campaign.

Sugar Shatter’s core loop is instantly readable: smack a candy ball, break more bricks than your opponent, and try not to get blindsided by hazards. The twist is how fighting‑game‑adjacent it feels. Each of the nine playable characters has distinct abilities, and learning their quirks gives the game a satisfying sense of mastery.

The campaign mode is surprisingly narrative‑forward, letting you hop through Candyland tournaments while unlocking buffs, upgrades, and little character arcs. It’s light, but it adds texture to what could’ve been a purely mechanical experience. Boss fights, all 10+ of them are the standout: chaotic, gimmicky, and occasionally unfair in that classic arcade way.

Multiplayer (online or local) is where the game really shines. Matches are fast, readable, and just messy enough to feel like a party game without losing competitive edge. Steam Deck support is strong, and the game’s bright pixel art looks great on handheld.

Pros

  • Clever fusion of brick‑breaker and fighting mechanics

  • Distinct characters with meaningful ability differences

  • Fun, chaotic boss fights

  • Strong local + online multiplayer

  • Bright, stylized pixel art and smooth controller support

Cons

  • Campaign storytelling is cute but shallow

  • Some boss encounters feel tuned for frustration

  • Limited long‑term depth once you’ve mastered the roster
