Hey fellow gamers, MezzaB here again, coming at you with a spooky musical review for XPN gaming.
What's all the shrieking about?
Scarlet Moon Records brought something a little different to the table with its third instalment of their Halloween collection.
Released on the 30th September 2024 with six tracks from various artists, including George Sanger aka "The Fat Man", who is known for working on video games such as Zombies Ate My Neighbours and The 7th Guest. The composer and arranger Soyo Oka, who is mostly known for her soundtracks on the Super Mario games, which include the legendary Rainbow Road.
Scarlet Moon Halloween Volume III brings you exciting listening with surf rock, Synthwave, and orchestral compositions amongst other styles. The album tracks include arrangements from The 7th Guest, Outer Wilds: Echoes of the Eye, and the Castlevania franchise.
Blah.. blah.. blah...
I do not go blah blah blah! Haha, sorry I couldn't resist with it being a Halloween album. (My favourite holiday of the year) I find this Halloween release good, but it lacks something... I can't put my finger, quite on what it is though. I feel the album starts strong with the first few tracks, but I'm left wanting something more from the album.
My favourite track from the album is track 2 Children of the Night ("Bloody Tears" from Castlevania II). If you are a Bram Stoker fan like me, you will recognise one of Dracula's most famous quotes in it: "Listen to them... The children of the night... what music they make." while wolves howl and an electrifying tempo plays in the background.
I can see the direction they were trying to go with the album, with the spookiness and eerie tunes. Unfortunately, this album just did not do it for me, but don't let that put you off; give it a listen and decide for yourselves if this is a hauntingly good album worthy of the Halloween season.
