Petunia’s Purgatory Review (Steam)

There's something strangely comforting about having a tiny eldritch farming operation quietly running at the bottom of your desktop. Petunia's Purgatory takes the increasingly popular desktop companion formula and gives it a delightfully warped twist, blending cosy idle farming mechanics with creepy Lovecraftian horror, dark humour, and a surprisingly charming protagonist trying to hold on to her sanity. The result is a game that feels equally happy sitting beside your workday monitor and slowly consuming your soul.

At its core, Petunia's Purgatory is an idle farming and resource management game where you grow cursed crops, feed an Elder God, and help Petunia maintain her fragile grip on reality before her hallucinations begin spilling across your desktop. Rather than demanding constant attention, the game happily occupies a small portion of your screen, allowing progress to tick along while you browse, work, or play something else. It's a simple concept, but one that's elevated by its wonderfully bizarre premise.

What immediately stands out is the game's visual identity. The pixel art strikes a wonderful balance between adorable and unsettling. Petunia herself is an expressive little character, while the farm gradually fills with increasingly strange crops, eldritch oddities, and unsettling visitors. The contrast between cute aesthetics and cosmic horror themes gives the game a unique personality that helps it stand apart from the growing crowd of desktop idlers.

Progression follows familiar idle-game conventions, with crops generating resources that can be reinvested into upgrades, automation, and further expansion. Thankfully, the pacing feels measured rather than aggressively grindy. There's always another upgrade to unlock or new piece of bizarre content to discover, making it easy to leave running in the background and check in every few minutes. The management elements never become overwhelmingly complex, keeping the experience accessible while still providing enough optimisation opportunities for players who enjoy tinkering with efficiency.

Perhaps the game's strongest feature is its atmosphere. While many idle titles rely purely on numbers going up, Petunia's Purgatory builds a genuine sense of place. The ongoing struggle to keep Petunia sane adds a layer of tension that sits just beneath the relaxed surface. The creeping horror elements don't overwhelm the cosy farming loop, but they ensure the game always feels slightly off in the best possible way. It's equal parts wholesome and unsettling, like a bedtime story told by a cultist.

The desktop companion format won't be for everyone. Players looking for active gameplay or deep strategic systems may find the experience a little passive. Much of the enjoyment comes from checking in periodically, watching your farm evolve, and uncovering the game's strange sense of humour. Those expecting a traditional farming simulator should temper their expectations accordingly.

Still, for fans of idle games, desktop companions, and quirky indie concepts, Petunia's Purgatory is easy to recommend. It successfully transforms what could have been a straightforward farming clicker into something far more distinctive thanks to its eldritch themes, charming presentation, and persistent desktop presence. It's a small game with a surprisingly memorable identity. Sometimes the best companion for a productive afternoon is a cursed farmer feeding crops to an ancient god.
