Lootbox Lyfe+ - Review - Xbox

I'm not sure why, but one day developer Conradical Games woke up and chose violence. I am saying this because they created Lootbox Lyfe which is a Metroidvania crossed with the high-skill movement/platforming of games like Super Meat Boy. It's the Dark Souls of platforming games, hidden behind a cute aesthetic - but don't be fooled, you are in for a challenge. Originally released on PC in 2020, Lootbox Lyfe is now available on Xbox consoles thanks to publisher Ratalaika Games, This time as Lootbox Lyfe+. This is described as the ultimate version of the game that includes a revamped UI, visual improvements, stability improvements, performance improvements, level balancing, and an all-new secret post-game level that tests your skills even further than usual.

The plot of the game sees you playing as Liam Cappello, the last Xoobotl in existence. You wake up after a long slumber to see the world in ruin and it's all because of those gosh darn lootboxes! Shadowleaf Irvine introduced Lootboxes to Liam's species, and soon enough, everyone was addicted to them. Slowly, Xoobotls stopped spending money on items essential to life such as food, and water. It was soon after that bodies started dropping. Is there a way to bring your species back to its past glory? Or is this world forever in ruins due to the evil Shadowleaf's monopolistic endeavor?

You start the game unable to do most of the things you would normally be able to do, but you will eventually unlock lootboxes giving you the ability to explore, then jump, then use a map. Each ability you find will enable you to access new areas to find even more lootboxes and eventually build up your ability arsenal. As this is a metroidvania, expect hidden collectables like coins that can be used as currency to buy shiny new hats or a hint to the next loot box.

What we liked:

  • Great soundtrack

  • Enjoyable movement once the game gets going

  • Not too long to complete (5 hours)

  • Unlocking mechanics as you go

  • Assist/Accessibility settings to make it easier if needed

  • Speedrun Mode

  • Well designed levels

What we didn't like:

  • Graphics are nothing special

  • Easy to get confused/lost in the large environments

  • Can be brutally difficult at times

Overall Lootbox Lyfe+ is a very interesting take on the metroidvania with a bigger emphasis on the platforming aspects. While the game isn't anything special to look at, the gameplay side more than makes up for it. It's also nice that there are options you can customize to make the game as difficult/easy as required. A fun few hours to be found in this unique lootbox world! TOTAL SCORE: 7/10

Lootbox Lyfe+ was released onto the Xbox store on the 24th February 2023. It's playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S consoles. The game is priced at £9.99 and can be purchased HERE. The game is also available on other consoles. A copy of the game was provided for this review. A big thanks for that.
