Hokko Spaces - Review - Nintendo Switch

Rather than chasing the life-sim ambitions of its sibling Hokko Life, Hokko Spaces strips everything back and focuses purely on creativity, offering players a cosy sandbox where building charming little dioramas is the entire point. Developed by Wonderscope Games and published by Team17, the game is all about creating miniature worlds filled with adorable animal residents, decorative props and peaceful vibes.

From the moment you start building, it's clear that Hokko Spaces has been designed for players who enjoy the creative side of life sims more than the management systems. There are no demanding objectives, no resource-grinding marathons and no stressful timers hanging over your head. Instead, you're given a collection of terrain blocks, decorations and environmental tools and invited to create relaxing scenes at your own pace. Whether that's a tranquil woodland retreat, a bustling village square or a cosy picnic area is entirely up to you.

The building tools are straightforward and easy to get to grips with. With over 300 decorative items available and multiple terrain types to work with, there's plenty of flexibility when it comes to customising your creations. Placing fences, flowers, campfires, benches and other props quickly becomes surprisingly addictive as you tweak layouts and add tiny details that make each scene feel lived in.

One of the game's strongest features is how it brings your creations to life. Completing simple goals unlocks a cast of animal villagers who wander around your crafted spaces, interact with furniture and generally make the world feel warm and welcoming. They may not offer deep social mechanics, but their presence adds personality and rewards your efforts with a sense that your miniature worlds are genuinely inhabited.

Atmosphere is where Hokko Spaces truly shines. Players can adjust the season, weather and time of day, dramatically changing the mood of each creation. A peaceful spring evening adorned with drifting blossoms feels entirely different from a frosty winter morning. These options encourage experimentation and help ensure that even small builds can feel unique.

The included Photo Mode is another welcome addition. After spending time perfecting every corner of your diorama, being able to frame shots, adjust angles and capture your favourite moments feels like the natural endgame. Much of the satisfaction comes from simply admiring what you've built and sharing those creations.

That said, players looking for progression-heavy gameplay may find Hokko Spaces a little too relaxed. Once the novelty of building wears off, there isn't a huge amount pushing you forward beyond your own creativity. The game succeeds because it embraces its sandbox nature, but that same simplicity means it won't appeal to everyone.

Visually, the colourful art style translates well to the Switch. The charming animal characters and miniature set-piece aesthetic give the game the feeling of interacting with a living dollhouse. Everything is bright, inviting and designed to promote a sense of calm.

Pros

  • Relaxing, stress-free creative gameplay

  • Large selection of decorative items

  • Seasons and weather add great atmosphere

  • Charming animal residents bring scenes to life

  • Excellent Photo Mode

Cons

  • Limited long-term progression

  • Gameplay loop may feel repetitive for some

  • Lacks deeper simulation mechanics found in other cosy games

Hokko Spaces is a delightful little creative sandbox that understands the appeal of slowing down and making something personal. It trades complexity for comfort and objectives for imagination, creating an experience that feels more like digital arts and crafts than a traditional game. Those searching for deep simulation mechanics may come away underwhelmed, but players who enjoy decorating, designing and creating cosy spaces will likely lose hours happily rearranging every fence, flower and picnic basket.
