From Obscured to Obsessed: Out Of Sight Preview

Out of Sight But In Your Head (In The Best Way)

Out of Sight, Not Out of Reach

After diving into the free demo of Out of Sight on Steam developed by The Gang and published by Starbreeze Entertainment. My curiosity was piqued, and my hunger for more of this game grew faster than I could keep up. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a preview key thanks to Keith from Renaissance PR.

Spoiler alert: it absolutely did not disappoint!

There is something magical about games that can whisper their way under your skin without screaming in your face, subtlety can often speak volumes. Out of Sight is exactly that kind of experience, unassuming at first glance but deeply atmospheric and surprisingly complex once you step into its shadowy world.

From the moment I loaded up the preview, I felt a familiar shiver of something I hadn’t felt since Little Nightmares, that blend of eerie, childlike curiosity and slow burning dread. However where Little Nightmares played like a side-scrolling fever dream, Out of Sight goes in a different direction literally. With its bold choice of a rarely seen 2nd-person perspective, the game pulls off something that feels both fresh and oddly intuitive. You’re not just watching your character... you’re watching them BE watched. It adds this strange, voyeuristic tension like you’re spying on your own character, or maybe they know you’re there. It’s a perspective that messes with your head in the best way.

"I always feel like somebody’s watching me"... turns out it’s just my anxiety

There’s a constant sense that something is almost watching you, and the 2nd-person camera only enhances that unease. It’s not just a gimmick it’s a clever storytelling and gameplay tool that makes every movement feel exposed, every misstep feel costly. And yet, for all its tension, the game is also weirdly cozy in a macabre kind of way. Like being wrapped in a blanket you found in an abandoned attic, warm but... questionable.

Visually, the game leans into soft shadows, muted tones, and a design language that’s equal parts storybook and surrealist painting. The world is strange but grounded, unsettling but oddly inviting. Paired with a subtle, moody soundtrack, the whole package feels like it came straight out of a beautifully dark bedtime story. You know, the kind you maybe shouldn’t have read before sleep.

Now, let’s talk gameplay. At its core, Out of Sight is a puzzle game, but don’t mistake that for simplicity. The puzzles hit that sweet spot for me, clever but also sometimes a little tricky, although never so hard they feel unfair or annoying. The puzzles hit that sweet spot clever, layered, sometimes devious but never unfair. Often the biggest obstacle was me! I would overthink the obvious, step away, and come back to find the answer practically waving at me.

There’s a real satisfaction in figuring the puzzles out, that kind of “I did it!” moment that follows 15 minutes (or more in my case) of head scratching. Each challenge feels lovingly designed, using the environment in smart ways that reward observation, timing, and sometimes a bit of trial and error. You will occasionally curse the developers while smiling the whole time.

Just when you’re getting comfortable, the game shifts gears with a dose of stealth driven tension. Every so often, the vibe shifts suddenly. You're not just solving puzzles, you're hiding...running.

Hoping whatever just creaked in the hallway didn’t hear you. These sequences are adrenaline spiking, but never overstay their welcome. They blend beautifully into the game’s pacing, keeping you on your toes just enough to make those quiet moments feel earned.

All in all, Out of Sight is shaping up to be something special. It’s the kind of game that doesn’t shout for your attention it whispers to it. It takes risks, plays with perspective (literally), and knows how to balance clever design with emotional beats. Whether you’re here for the puzzles, the creep factor, or just to see what the heck a 2nd-person camera even looks like, this game has something unique to offer.

I cannot wait for everyone to experience it when it releases on May 22nd. (Only 3 more sleeps!)

Until then, keep the lights low... and maybe glance behind you, just in case.
