Deified - Steam Review

There is no shortage of roguelites on Steam these days, and even fewer manage to bring something genuinely fresh to the table. At first glance, Deified looks like another dark fantasy strategy game built around randomised runs and increasingly powerful builds. Spend a few hours with it, however, and you'll discover a surprisingly clever tactical roguelite that carves out its own identity through an inventive relic system and a refreshing approach to turn-based combat.
Developed by Unexpected and published by Goblinz Publishing, Deified places you in a cursed world where the Gold of the Rhine has been corrupted by god-like beings to create powerful relics and eternal suffering. You step into the role of Sator, setting out to challenge these fallen rulers and reclaim the gold for your people. While the story takes a back seat to the gameplay for much of the adventure, the game's gloomy atmosphere, moral themes, and mysterious worldbuilding provide enough context to make each run feel purposeful.

What immediately separates Deified from many of its genre peers is its combat system. Rather than relying on mana pools, action points, cooldown timers, or other traditional restrictions, the game strips combat down to its essentials. Every turn becomes an exercise in positioning, planning, and understanding your build rather than simply waiting for powerful abilities to recharge. It creates battles that feel remarkably clean and strategic, rewarding thoughtful decisions over brute-force tactics.
The real star of the show is the relic system. Throughout a run you'll discover increasingly powerful relics, each offering unique abilities and bonuses. Collecting relics of similar types creates powerful synergies, encouraging experimentation and build crafting. One run might focus on overwhelming enemies through status effects, while another revolves around chaining abilities together in devastating combinations. Few victories feel accidental. Success comes from understanding how your relics interact and finding clever ways to exploit those interactions.

Adding another layer of depth is the game's slot management mechanic. Every relic requires a slot, and each slot comes with both benefits and drawbacks. This means you're constantly weighing risk against reward. A slot may provide a useful boost to your strategy while simultaneously introducing a penalty that changes how you approach encounters. It's a simple concept that creates meaningful decisions throughout an entire run, forcing players to adapt rather than blindly stacking power.
Boss encounters are another highlight. The game features seven major bosses, each designed around their own mechanics and curses. Rather than serving as simple stat checks, these battles often force you to rethink established strategies and react to new threats. When a build finally comes together and allows you to overcome one of these challenging encounters, the sense of accomplishment is immense.

Visually, Deified embraces a stylised dark fantasy aesthetic that complements its oppressive setting. The isometric presentation keeps battles readable while still delivering plenty of atmosphere. Enemy designs are memorable, spell effects are satisfying without becoming overwhelming, and the overall art direction gives the game a distinctive personality among a crowded field of roguelites with its thick lines and bright colours.
That said, Deified isn't entirely without issues. Its systems can feel intimidating during the opening hours, and some players may need time to fully grasp how relic synergies, slot modifiers, and progression mechanics interact. The learning curve is part of the appeal, but newcomers expecting a more straightforward roguelite might find the early experience somewhat overwhelming. Certain encounters can also feel lengthy, something the developers have continued to address through post-launch balance updates.

Pros
Excellent relic and synergy system
Unique slot management mechanic
Deep tactical combat without action point restrictions
Challenging and memorable boss encounters
Strong dark fantasy atmosphere
Cons
Steep learning curve for newcomers
Some encounters can occasionally drag
Story largely takes a back seat to the gameplay

Deified succeeds by taking familiar roguelite foundations and building genuinely interesting systems on top of them. The combination of tactical combat, deep relic synergies, and clever slot management creates a strategic experience that constantly presents meaningful decisions. It's a game that rewards experimentation, adaptation, and long-term mastery rather than simply grinding for better upgrades. Deified is easy to recommend. Its learning curve may be steep, but the depth waiting on the other side makes the climb more than worthwhile.
