CONSCRIPT: Director's Cut - Mini Review

CONSCRIPT: Director’s Cut is an expanded, refined version of the original indie WWI survival‑horror game CONSCRIPT. Think of it as the same core experience with tight corridors, brutal scarcity, retro style visuals, and that constant feeling of being hunted, but with a layer of polish and extra content that makes the whole thing feel more deliberate and complete.

What does this directors cut version include?

  • Shellshock Difficulty – Brutal new mode with stronger enemies and scarcer resources; Not for the faint of heart.

  • Hardcore Mode – Permadeath for players who enjoy high-stakes gameplay.

  • Shoot on the Move – Move whilst shooting or keep the 'stand and shoot' style from the classic survival-horror games.

  • Extra Rooms & Shortcuts – Level design changes to improve pacing and aid seamless exploration through the trenches.

  • New Items & Upgrades – 14 new items and upgrades to unlock; Carry more items with extra inventory slots; Place more map markers to help with traversal.

  • Quality of Life (QoL) Improvements – Infinite stamina whilst not in combat, smoother resource management and more.

  • Accessibility Features – Additional visual aids and control options.

  • New Achievements – 8 new challenges for completionists.

Check out my video review of the original release:

The Director’s Cut adds improved visuals, rebalanced combat, smoother pacing, and some new or reworked narrative moments that give the story a bit more emotional weight. It doesn’t reinvent the game or change its identity; instead, it sharpens what was already there. If you played the original, this version feels like the developer going back with a clearer head and saying, “Okay, here’s the version I really wanted you to play.” It’s still grim, still tense, still very much a love letter to classic survival horror, just more cohesive and confident overall.

Combat is still intentionally clumsy (that’s part of the charm), but the Director’s Cut rebalances things so it feels tense rather than occasionally unfair. Ammo and healing feel better distributed, and enemy behaviour is a bit more readable. It’s the same dance, just with fewer moments where you want to throw your controller.

So lets get to the big question - Is it worth replaying if you finished the original?

Yes — but not because it’s a totally different game.

It’s worth replaying because it feels like the definitive version of the thing you already liked.

If the original clicked with you, the atmosphere, the tension, the retro survival‑horror design, then the Director’s Cut is basically the “author’s intent” version. It’s tighter, more confident, and more emotionally grounded. It doesn’t reinvent CONSCRIPT; it refines it into something that feels complete.

If you only played the original once and enjoyed it, the Director’s Cut is absolutely worth another run. If you were obsessed and squeezed every drop out of it, this version still gives you enough new texture and flow to make the return trip feel fresh
