Ayasa: Shadows of Silence Review (Xbox Series X|S)

There is no shortage of moody indie platformers trying to blend puzzles, platforming, and symbolism into a meaningful journey. What makes Ayasa: Shadows of Silence stand out is its commitment to telling a dark fantasy tale almost entirely without words. Drawing on surreal imagery, eerie environments, and a fascinating light-versus-darkness theme, Aya Games has crafted an atmospheric adventure that often feels like stepping through a living storybook nightmare.
Set within the mysterious Inverted World, the game follows Ayasa as she travels through six symbolic realms representing Faith, Hope, Love, Greed, Indifference, and Betrayal. Once maintained by a powerful being known as Tas, this fractured world has fallen into darkness, leaving Ayasa to seek out the remaining fragments of light and restore balance. Rather than delivering its story through dialogue, the game relies on visual storytelling, symbolism, and environmental details to communicate its themes.

That approach works surprisingly well. The silent narrative encourages players to interpret events themselves, making the journey feel deeply personal. Some of the symbolism can be heavy-handed, but the game's willingness to trust players to fill in the blanks gives its story a unique identity. It's the kind of experience that may leave different players with very different interpretations of what they've witnessed.
Gameplay combines platforming, environmental puzzles, and occasional stealth sequences. The central mechanic revolves around light and shadow, with Ayasa using light to reveal pathways, activate mechanisms, and overcome obstacles. New abilities are unlocked throughout the adventure, gradually expanding the ways players interact with the world and solve puzzles.

The puzzles strike a satisfying balance between accessibility and challenge. Rarely frustrating, they encourage observation and experimentation rather than brute-force trial and error. Platforming sections are equally solid, demanding precision without becoming punishing. While veterans of the genre may find some of the solutions predictable, the constant introduction of new mechanics helps keep the adventure engaging from one realm to the next.
Visually, Ayasa: Shadows of Silence is easily at its best. The developers cite influences ranging from Tim Burton and Hayao Miyazaki to René Laloux, and that inspiration is evident throughout the experience. Twisted architecture, haunting landscapes, strange creatures, and dreamlike colour palettes create a world that's simultaneously beautiful and unsettling.
Each land has its own distinct personality, ensuring the journey never feels visually repetitive. Whether wandering through moments of fragile beauty or confronting manifestations of corruption and despair, there's always something intriguing on screen. The art direction does much of the heavy lifting in storytelling, and it succeeds where many dialogue-free adventures struggle.

The soundtrack deserves equal praise. With no traditional conversations to guide players, the music carries much of the emotional weight. The score creates a constant sense of tension, melancholy, and wonder that perfectly complements the surreal environments. Combined with strong sound design, it helps immerse players in a world that feels genuinely otherworldly.
If there is a weakness, it's that the game occasionally prioritises atmosphere over mechanical depth. Some sections feel more concerned with presenting striking imagery than introducing meaningful gameplay challenges. Players seeking demanding platforming or deeply complex puzzles may come away wishing there was more substance beneath the presentation. The pacing can also slow during extended exploration segments, particularly when navigating larger areas.

Pros
Stunning surreal art direction
Effective dialogue-free storytelling
Clever light-and-shadow mechanics
Strong soundtrack and atmosphere
Varied symbolic worlds to explore
Cons
Some puzzles feel familiar
Gameplay occasionally takes a back seat to presentation
Exploration sections can slow the pacing down

Ayasa: Shadows of Silence is an impressively crafted puzzle-platformer that combines gorgeous surreal visuals, clever environmental puzzles, and a memorable dialogue-free story. While its gameplay doesn't always reach the same heights as its artistic ambition, the overall experience is captivating and distinctive. For players who enjoy atmospheric adventures such as Limbo, Inside, or Little Nightmares, this is well worth stepping into the shadows for.
