Öoo - Review - Xbox

Öoo doesn’t waste time explaining itself. You wake inside the belly of a giant bird, playing as a caterpillar whose body segments are bombs, and the game simply trusts you to figure things out. There’s no text, no tutorials, no exposition, just visual cues, environmental nudges, and a world that quietly teaches you how to move, jump, and eventually master the art of controlled explosions.

What’s immediately striking is how confidently Öoo commits to minimalism. The presentation is clean and charming, but beneath that simplicity lies a puzzle‑platformer that’s constantly surprising, often ingenious, and occasionally devious. The Xbox version runs beautifully, with crisp visuals and responsive controls that make its physics‑driven movement feel tactile and expressive.

The core mechanic of detonating your own body segments to propel yourself is explored with remarkable depth. Early on, you’re just placing a single bomb beneath you to hop upward. But as you gain additional segments, the game begins layering in new possibilities: double‑bomb chains, mid‑air redirects, improvised platforms, and momentum tricks that let you glide, hover, or fling yourself across the map.

What’s impressive is how Öoo teaches all of this without a single word. Each new area introduces a fresh twist, then trusts you to experiment. The puzzles escalate in complexity but never feel unfair; they’re built around clarity, rhythm, and that wonderful “aha!” moment when a solution clicks.

The world itself is a surreal digestive system of interconnected screens and reinforces this sense of discovery. Frogs act as progression gates, fireflies become keys, and teleporters open shortcuts as you master new techniques. It’s compact, but dense with secrets, hidden routes, and optional challenges that push your bomb‑handling skills to their limit.

Players who dig deeper will find Öoo has more going on than its short runtime suggests. There are secret puzzles, alternate routes, and a meta‑layer of challenges that reward mastery of its physics.

It’s here that Öoo feels closest to its inspirations: games like ElecHead, VVVVVV, Bomb Chicken, and Cocoon, titles that take one idea and explore it with obsessive precision.

Pros

  • Clever, deeply explored bomb‑movement mechanic

  • Wordless design that teaches through play

  • Compact world filled with secrets and smart puzzles

  • Charming, surreal presentation

  • Runs flawlessly on Xbox

Cons

  • Very short if you mainline the critical path

  • Some advanced puzzles rely on precise physics timing

  • Minimal narrative may feel too sparse for some players

Öoo is a rare kind of minimalist puzzle‑platformer: small in scope, but huge in imagination. It’s the sort of game you finish in a couple of hours but keep thinking about afterward, replaying puzzles in your head, wondering how something so simple managed to feel so clever.

On Xbox, it’s a perfect fit as it's smooth, snappy, and instantly readable. If you enjoy inventive indies, wordless design, or games that reward experimentation, Öoo is absolutely worth your time.
